Work-Life Balance Happy Hour

Presenter: Dr. Lily M. Wang, Director of the Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction in the College of Engineering at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln

All persons in the workforce maintain some work-life balance (or work-life integration), although it may be less or more than they wish. We seek to be successful in professional endeavors, while also maintaining personal interests, family responsibilities, general health and wellness, and more. This first portion of this professional development session features a presenter and three panelists who will share information and individual experiences of how they have sought to maintain healthy work-life integration. In the latter half of the session, participants will be asked to join roundtable discussions on specific issues of interest to the table group (e.g. integrating childcare, elder care, work travel, volunteer activities, etc.), sharing approaches and strategies to achieve positive work-life integration. Refreshments will be served!

Panelists:

  • Katherine Burzynski, Materials Engineer, Air Force Research Lab.
  • Corinne D’Ambrosio, Self Employed, NPB Technology Group, Inc.
  • Mike Meyer, Global Marketing Manager Advanced Energy

Curve Fitting of XPS Spectra: Challenges and Where to Start Lunch*

Moderator: Jeff Fenton, Honeywell FM&T

A recent Applied Surface Science session at AVS, a series of publications, and ASTM committee meetings have focused on the challenges in reproducibility and reliability of surface analysis, in particular XPS analysis. These publications focused on solutions to the reproducibility challenges, practical guides to procedures for calibration, and more. This Lunch-N-Learn session will focus on the challenges in XPS curve fitting. What are common mistakes made? What parameters should I start with first? Which lineshape: Gaussian-Lorentzian, Asymmetric Lorentzian, Double Lorentzian, Doniach Sunjic, etc? Which resources are there that can help guide me or who can I ask? If you want to improve curve fitting and XPS analysis, this Lunch-N-Learn will provide an excellent opportunity.

Panelists:

  • Alberto Herrera-Gomez, Cinvestav-Unidad Queretaro, Mexico
  • Mark C. Biesinger, The University of Western Ontario Surface Science Western
  • George Major, Brigham Young University
